SMU School of Social Sciences Dean Professor James Tang was invited by Channel 8 News to share his thoughts following the outcome of the US Presidential Elections on 9 November 2016, in which Republican Donald Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton to become the 45th president of the United States. Prof Tang shared his views on the impact of Trump’s victory on US’ Asia-Pacific pivot as well as the US-Japan defence relations. He noted that Trump is at a “bargaining” stage where he will definitely start negotiations with key stakeholders to discuss the future developments of the various policies, particularly on the issue of whether Japan will increase its financial contribution to maintain American facilities in Japan. Prof Tang also emphasised that it is too early for the US to withdraw all of its troops from Asia. On how Trump’s policies could impact Singapore, Prof Tang opined that even though Trump openly said that Singapore is one of the countries that is taking away jobs from Americans, he believes that it is not likely that the US will perceive Singapore as a key competitor given our small economy.
