Congratulations to Assistant Professor Onur Ulas Ince on being awarded the Princeton Fung Global Fellowship by the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies.
Fung Global Fellows Program is an interdisciplinary research initiative at Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS) that annually brings together an international coterie of early-career scholars around a particular theme. The theme for the 2019-2020 academic year is “Thinking Globally.” Fellows will explore how rival ways of thinking about the planet in the past and the present have informed norms, policies, and institutions that have fostered competition and conflict, order and disorder, and cross-border connection and retrenchment. During the term of the fellowship, Assistant Professor Ince will work on his second book project entitled, Between Commerce and Empire, which examines political economic arguments against European colonialism in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Building on his first book, Colonial Capitalism and the Dilemmas of Liberalism (Oxford UP, 2018), this project focuses on the historical dependence of global commercial development on imperial institutions and practices, and on how this interdependence posed a limit to liberal critiques of empire articulated by British statesmen, publicists, and political economists. In addition to contributing to the growing scholarship on global intellectual history, the theoretical insights of this study will cast fresh light on contemporary debates over the liberal and authoritarian dimensions of capitalism.
