SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology Paulin Straughan commented on the welfare of migrant workers in Singapore which included concerns such as non-payment of wages, poor accommodation and lack of occupational safety. Prof Straughan noted that “it is about consciously thinking through what migrant workers do for us, and how they add value to our everyday lives” and that if we can get that right, “it will translate to a more dignified social interaction with them.” This will also result in Singaporeans learning to value their presence and appreciate the sacrifices that they have made in order to work in Singapore. She also shared her views on implementing legislation and other considerations to help improve the welfare of workers.
