Commenting on the trend of more people using technology to find a new home and owner for their preloved things, SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan noted that more people are donating their items through such means due to the excess from increased spending and consumption. She also pointed out the rebranding in the terminology used, as people move away from calling the items second hand, but now use words which have more positive connotations. Another factor for the prevalence of such behaviour is that the means of doing so are now more available.
