SMU School of Social Sciences Dean Professor James Tang shared his views on the impact of Donald Trump’s presidency on US-Singapore economic relations and collaboration. He noted that Trump’s disapproval of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) could directly affect Singapore. He also pointed out that the Republican Party winning the presidency and clinching the majority in the House and Senate, means that it is very unlikely that the TPP will be ratified. While Prof Tang does not think that this will affect Singapore’s economy in the short run, he said it is inevitable that a Trump presidency could see a period of unpredictability and volatility in the market given his lack of political experience.
