The SMU School of Social Sciences held its Commencement Ceremony on 14 July 2017 at the new SMU School of Law Function Hall. A total of 171 SOSS graduates attended this milestone event together with their parents and guests, which marked the completion of their journey here at SMU. It was a celebration of both their academic successes and personal growth over the past few years.
We are proud to announce that Tan Yiwen, one of our graduating Bachelor of Social Science students, received the SPH Valedictorian Award this year. This prestigious award is given annually to the highest ranking graduating student from the entire SMU undergraduate cohort. Candidates vying for the award must have obtained a Summa Cum Laude, displayed outstanding leadership skills with significant contributions to co-curricular activities and the community-at-large, and have impeccable character records and excellent oratorical skills.
The DBS Bank School Valedictorian in Social Sciences for this year is Tan Wen Yun, who graduates with a double degree in Social Sciences and Business Management. For her valedictory address, she gave a heartfelt and humorous speech that reminded the audience of the significance of a social science education during a time where an increasing number of jobs are being taken over by robots and automation.
