The decline in Singapore's total fertility rate needs reversing. The focus is now on creating a supportive social climate and attitudes that encourage child-bearing. Seven attitudes have been identified to be standing in the way of couples having more babies. A study by Associate Professor Norman Li of SMU last year threw some light on the causes of singlehood ? the 6th social phenomenon / attitude identified. His study found that the top criterion Singaporean women look for in a potential husband is social status, whereas men go for looks first.
