On meeting the financial needs of unpaid caregivers looking after their loved ones, SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan believes that the government needs to provide support, but disagrees with distinguishing them from general low-income workers. She explained that the existing measures are sufficient to provide coverage for low-income families with different needs. If these subsidies are insufficient to offset the expenses of the caregivers and their families, they can apply for additional help through medical social workers. Prof Straughan believes that public policies should be made simple and clear, for them to be effective. She pointed out that in order to reduce the caregivers’ burdens, it is more important to set up a "self-help" community, with complete hardware and heart ware.
