In the second episode of the two-part television documentary on the age of innovation and Singapore, SMU Behavioural Sciences Institute Director Professor David Chan noted that the development of Changi airport enables many different people to move in and out of Singapore very quickly, which was necessary for the ideas of openness and diversity to become reality. He also explained that while Singapore's public housing was developed to address a physical and existential problem, it also aimed to address issues of social integration among the different ethnic groups in Singapore.
In the second episode of the two-part television documentary on the age of innovation and Singapore, SMU School of Social Sciences Associate Professor of English Literature Kirpal Singh commented on the overcrowded conditions in Singapore in the late 1950s. He recalled the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew telling university students at that time that what Singaporeans needed were fundamentals as there were a lot of people who were living in dwellings that might not “be the best in terms of providing new ways of getting rid of sewage, new piping for water, gas in terms of cooking and all of that.” Associate Prof Singh noted that Mr Lee “came up with the idea of this very massive total change”.
