In light of the government’s recent “circuit breaker” measures to combat the spread of Covid-19, SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Tay Straughan discussed why the elderly are unable to abide by the rules and stop going out. She said that the measures are understandably more difficult for some of the lower educated and even illiterate elderly as they usually get their information from their circle of friends, and now that socialising is disallowed, they have lost their channel of information. She added that in implementing any new measures, special attention needs to be placed on the elderly and she provided suggestions as to how the elderly may be kept up to date with the latest measures.
