In CNA’s “Being Singaporean” documentary, SMU Assistant Professor of Political Science (Education) Nathan Peng, who helped design the “privilege walk” social experiment, opined that one's socioeconomic status determines the sense of belonging, and when different groups cannot identify with one another, their identity starts to diverge, fuelling the sense of exclusion. He also stressed the dangers of using meritocracy to justify inequality, and the need to recognise the disadvantages of having less and help to mitigate some of these effects.
