Sharing her insights on Singapore’s ageing society, SMU Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan, Director of SMU’s Centre for Research on Successful Ageing (ROSA), noted that with over eight in ten older adults in Singapore preferring to age in their own homes, the demand for caregivers would continue to grow. She cautioned that relying solely on migrant domestic workers was unsustainable and stressed the need to develop local talent in eldercare, and added that Singaporeans should learn to see their neighbourhoods and communities as extended families.
