Commenting on the comprehensive review of issues affecting women to bring about a cultural and mindset change on values such as gender equality and respect for women, SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan said that while the conversations have asked for more support for women, the resulting outcomes and any policy changes should not perpetuate gender stereotypes by keeping women in those roles. Instead, parental leave could be enhanced so that fathers can also take time off to do what most mothers now do. Prof Straughan also suggested creating spaces at the community level where women who face violence or other challenges feel safe enough to speak up, and can be sure that they will be taken seriously.
