A social and financial effect would be brought about when children are being taken care of by their grandparents. For example, people would assume that grandparents would be responsible for taking care of their grandchildren, said SMU Assistant Professor of Sociology Chung Wai-Keung. The financial liability is also lower because grandparents may not charge a fee for their services. However, this would make it difficult for the Government to implement any subsidy schemes since there is no way to ascertain if the grandparents are really offering child care support. Assistant Prof Chung advised grandparents, who are taking care of their grandchildren, that they should ensure that it is not a burden to them.
