In an interview, Professor Paulin Straughan, Director of SMU’s Centre for Research on Successful Ageing (ROSA), commented on caring for elderly parents in Singapore. Prof Straughan shared her views on why Singaporean parents are reluctant to talk openly about their desire or need for caretaking and financial support from their children. Prof Straughan finds that there is a contradiction between what parents verbalise and the social environment in Singapore due to shifting norms.
