Commenting on the recent study by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) which revealed that one in every three Singaporeans have considered emigrating in the next five years, SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan noted that as the study was aimed at young Singaporeans, it is therefore not surprising for them to envy a life abroad. The study also found an increased number of Singaporeans who believed that foreign talent has contributed to Singapore’s development. Prof Straughan pointed out that the results reflected the contradictions that Singaporeans have towards foreigners. She explained that the immigration issue is complicated by nature, and that it is understandable that nobody would want to live in a place with intense competition.
