In a CNA938 interview on the recent wave of dismissals by US President Donald Trump, SMUAssociate Professor of Political Science John Donaldson said the unusual aspect of Mr Trump’s dismissals lies not only in their scale but in their roots in his discomfort with facts, with entire agencies gutted in a “machete style” that leaves dangerous leadership gaps. While some see this as streamlining, Assoc Prof Donaldson warned of long-term damage, noting the moves may also reflect Mr Trump’s desire for good news before elections. He added that the firings send a troubling signal abroad, even as most Americans remain disengaged from foreign policy, and questioned how Mr Trump’s legacy, popularity, and the Republican Party would endure future crises amid weakened institutions.
