In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Science, Technology, and Society Winston Chow discussed how the Covid-19 pandemic presents an opportunity for governments and policymakers to implement sustainable long-term policies aligned to the Paris Agreement. While lockdowns worldwide have significantly reduced global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from last year’s record, Assoc Prof Chow highlighted the need for leaders to have a coherent, fair, and long-term developmental vision towards net-zero GHG emissions and the political will to sustain it.
