
According to SMU Professor Paulin Straughan, Director of Centre for Research on Successful Ageing, Singapore has made comprehensive efforts to cope with an ageing society. Prof Straughan commented that when longevity is no longer a problem, the future needs to focus on how to achieve healthy ageing. She believes that Singaporeans generally devote a lot of time to their careers and pride themselves on hard work, but this comes at a price. Singapore could perhaps learn from Japan by encouraging the elderly to build mutual support networks within their own neighbourhoods
