In response to the news (12 June 2017) on the detention of the radicalised person in Singapore and the issue of family not alerting the authorities, SMU Behavioural Sciences Institute Director Professor David Chan explained that the action to not report loved ones to the authorities is a "human response" regardless of race, religion or background. He cautioned that even though this may be considered by some as a natural or a right response, not reporting can in fact put the radicalised person in danger and also for others around them.
