SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan opined that the decline in birth rate and the tightening of immigration policies are the two main reasons for the slowdown in population growth. She believes that moving forward, Singapore will need to rely on a smaller but well-trained workforce. Businesses have to accelerate the pace of automation when appropriate and leverage on technology to reduce our dependence on low-skilled labour.
