In an interview with Lianhe ZaoBao, SMU School of Social Sciences Associate Professor of Political Science John Donaldson shared his views on the US elections and the implications of a possible victory by Hillary Clinton. He mentioned that the elections has split the Republican Party and they will have to relook at the nomination system to get a preferred (and electable) candidate. But they face a dilemma, as by controlling the process more, it might further alienate and frustrate the voter. Associate Prof Donaldson noted that America’s partners in Europe and Asia would be happy to work constructively with Hillary Clinton. However, he also stressed that the US needs to do its best to ensure that a disruptive figure like Donald Trump is never nominated again.
