In an interview, Assistant Professor of Sociology Chung Wai Keung said that unless the Chinese or the Hong Kong government can come to some sort of an agreement with the democrats, the status quo will remain – true universal suffrage will not be achieved. It is obvious that the Chinese government wants to make use of the current system to keep out the democrats. He felt that Hong Kongers might have misunderstood the meaning of ‘One Country, Two Systems’, hence the recent White Paper by the Chinese government was issued to clarify these doubts.
