Commenting on the trend of remote working brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan said working from home is not just about physical relocation. She said, “It is a whole new transformation of organisational culture, it changes the way we work and the way we account for KPIs (key performance indicators).” Prof Straughan also explained how COVID-19 has “highlighted inequality” in our daily lives. She opined that a cultural change is needed, and hoped that employers will continue to respect family time and the downtime accorded to their employees, even while working from home, and “not use it as an excuse to exploit them”. But if this cannot be achieved, then you might end up with a whole generation of the labour force who suffer from burnout and disillusionment, she warned.
