Sharing insights on the bystander effect and inconsiderate behaviour on public transport, SMUAssistant Professor of Sociology (Education) George Wong said that in Singapore, many people typically believe that these social norms are supposed to be enforced by bus drivers, the police and other authorities. He added that the public may hesitate to step up because of the social cost of confronting someone. He cautioned that without correction, offenders might assume their behaviour is acceptable and persist if they believe they can get away with it.
