SMU Assistant Professor of Sociology (Education) George Wong said that shared spaces are inevitably going to be negotiated and full of tensions, and one cannot assume negotiations will always end favourably for all. Asst Prof Wong also noted that hostile architecture has sometimes been how spaces are redesigned to address public outcry over shared spaces. He also highlighted that while the design of town centres is neutral, it plays a significant role in nudging or limiting certain uses and communities.
