Commenting on the proposed amendments to the Casino Control Act, SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan said that these revisions reflect the government's commitment to protecting vulnerable groups in Singapore from the ill effects of gambling. However, she emphasised that while the exclusionary rules are important, follow-up counselling and education are equally crucial. She added, "In particular, those who are in debt are likely to see the casino and other forms of gambling as the only way to recuperate their losses. So in addition to banning them from the casinos, social workers may have to step in and advise them on how to rise from their incurred debts through regular means other than gambling.”
