SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan said that despite the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) outbreak in 2003, people are still going to work while sick. She opined that this could be due to some being too young to remember the situation then. “During Sars, people were more cautious and aware if they had respiratory symptoms,” she said. “But after Sars, they returned to their old habits.” She added that a whole new generation will rise again with no clue about what infectious diseases outbreaks are and the cycle will repeat.
