SMU Associate Professor of Political Science John Donaldson said that China can imitate what Europe and America have done by moving industries that cause heavy pollution out of the country. However, the majority of farmers and poorly educated workers may not be able to cope with the new industries that will take the place of these industries causing pollution. Also, these new industries may not produce enough jobs, and the public will not be happy with this. Associate Prof Donaldson was also of the opinion that China is not putting enough resources into scientific research and development. Coupled with poor intellectual rights protection, there will be less incentive to venture into innovations. It will also be difficult to get the people to give up on car ownership and usage as it is part of the “China Dream”.
