
Experts point to a few common factors that contribute to the "flattening" of friendships. However, familiarity often plays an important function in people’s social lives, and some "boring" friendships are needed in terms of offering a safe space to unwind and be authentic. SMU Assistant Professor of Psychology Kenneth Tan said that having a boring friendship is a normal thing and healthy for the most part, because it signifies stability and safety. However, Asst Prof Tan also pointed out that reduced exposure to diversity of thought and social interaction can negatively affect our cognitive flexibility.
