In a partnership between RICE Media and SMU for its WRIT300 Professional Writing module, SMU SOSS student Koh Jun Peng reflected on how silence around death is deeply ingrained in many Singaporean families, shaped by superstition and stoicism. The article shared how a parent’s cancer diagnosis prompted difficult but meaningful conversations about fear, time and what truly matters. Jun Peng noted that avoiding such discussions does not make them less important, only harder when circumstances eventually force them. The article concluded that one of the deepest expressions of love is having the courage to say what needs to be said before it is too late.
