Commenting on the Great Resignation, SMU Assistant Professor of Psychology Jacinth Tan shared that this phenomenon is caused by several factors, including feeling burnout due to work-life imbalance, experiencing unfair treatment at workplaces and finding work meaningless. She noted that it is common for the hierarchical system in Singapore to be strict, but observed that the organisational structure is becoming more equal, whilst the expectations of the new generation of employees have also changed. She pointed out that they are pursuing more autonomy, meaningful work and work-life balance. Asst Prof Tan added that the pandemic has also pushed employees to pay more attention to details such as flexible work arrangements and empathetic bosses and organisations. As these changes become more mainstream, she believes that workplaces will begin to incorporate them in response to demands from the new generation workers, so as to soften the next wave of resignations.
