In the podcast, SMU Assistant Professor of Humanities (Education) Charlotte Setijadi told Channel News Asia (CNA) that growing sectarianism in Indonesia played a role in the Indonesia riot. She discussed how Mr Joko Widodo that has been re-elected as the President of Indonesia was claimed to be anti-Islam and is not supportive towards the implementation of Shariah law. She added that Mr Widodo pandered towards Islamic factions by declaring Mr Ma'ruf Amin as his running mate, who is now going to be the vice president, and is also the current Chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama and one of the most respected people in Indonesia. Prof Setijadi opined that Mr Prabowo Subianto is firming up oppositional stands and co-opting Islamic factions along with his defeat.
