Commenting on whether choosing holistic development over the local academic pressure cooker is a privilege, SMU Assistant Professor of Sociology (Education) George Wong said that the ability to choose exists because the system "still perpetuates" those with privilege, resources and capital. SMU Assistant Professor of Sociology Jacqueline Ho also pointed out that parents face a dilemma between slower, child-paced learning and fear of their children falling behind, a tension shaped by financial insecurity and unequal access to resources that allow only some families to opt out of the academic race.
