In a forum letter, [SMU School of Social Sciences Associate Professor of Psychology] Christie Napa Scollon shared her thoughts on the benefits of Car-Free Sundays, a pilot initiative that is part of a move to transform Singapore into a car-lite country. As a social psychologist who has been researching happiness for more than 15 years, Associate Prof Scollon argued that Car-Free Sundays have the potential to improve the happiness of the residents of Singapore. While she acknowledged that it is not free to operate Car-Free Sundays, she believes that the return on investment (in terms of the happiness of Singaporeans) will far outweigh the costs.
