SMU Associate Professor of Psychology Norman Li contributed to a discussion on the social trends that are challenging the norms of marriage – rising singlehood, infidelity, and co-habitation – and whether the values of marriage are worth upholding in Singapore. He addressed questions on whether marriage is still valued, whether unmarried co-habiting couples and parents should enjoy equal rights to married couples and parents, what is driving the increasing number of marriages between Singaporeans and non-Singaporeans, the reasons for the increase in the average age at which people get married, and whether current social policies promoting marriage and parenthood are effective or promote over-reliance on the state.
