Commenting on the various moves to reduce stress of workers, SMU Assistant Professor of Psychology Jacinth Tan opined that many local SMEs have a relatively negative attitude towards workplace mental health, as they believe that it is something that can only be done with dedicated human resources. However, Asst Prof Tan pointed out that mental health at workplaces is not an unfamiliar concept; it is what is commonly termed "stress", and we can manage it from a different perspective. She shared that in the past five years, social movements and businesses have started and expanded dialogues that focus on understanding workplace mental health. At the same time, more companies are starting to implement flatter organisational structures and cultures that promote open communication, flexible working hours and other employee benefits.
