Commenting on the Ministry of Social and Family Development’s (MSF) report on social mobility SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan said that we need to look beyond results and consider the talents and a child’s family background to ensure better social mixing. With Singapore placing a high value in meritocracy, Prof Straughan added that we also need to keep in mind that not everyone starts off equally and thus we need to relook at how to reward based on merit but still being mindful about this trade-off. Aside from that, she also commented how we all need to shift our focus to other inequalities that are not so evident but may be more important like social networks and connectivity with others which aids in providing new opportunities for an individual.
