SMU Assistant Professor of Psychology Kenneth Tan noted that approximately 1 per cent of the population reports no sexual attraction. He emphasised that asexuality should not be "pathologised" (treated as an illness) as there is no impairment to daily life, and being asexual does not result from trauma. Instead, any distress often stems from the stigma of a minority identity. Asst Prof Tan also found it interesting that emerging research links support for asexual individuals to higher life satisfaction.
