Commenting on the Proximity Housing Grant (PHG), which was introduced by the Housing Development Board in August 2015, SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan noted that as our society ages, it is important to have in place a social structure that promotes and enables ageing-in-place. Having grown-up children live within close proximity will facilitate a social support system where family can be the first responders in times of crisis or when assistance is needed. She added that the PHG allows the formation of a new form of extended family – of generations within the neighbourhood.
