The sports community needs icons and Singapore's para-sports fraternity have role models in the likes of Paralympic champion Yip Pin Xiu, an SMU alumna, fellow swimmer and Paralympian Theresa Goh and gritty table tennis player Jason Chee. In March 2017, Kevin Wong, President, Singapore Disability Sports Council launched an ambitious $20 million, four-year blueprint with the aim to not only increase participation rates in sports among people with disabilities, but also to beef up the support and development framework for the athletes.
Ms Yip will be representing Singapore as its Chef de Mission at the Asian Youth Para Games in Dubai to be held in December 2017. At a dinner last evening to honour the athletes’ achievements at the recent Kuala Lumpur Asean Para Games, Ms Yip received the Singapore flag from Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth.
