Commenting on Singapore’s poetry scene, SMU Wee Kim Wee Centre Director, Associate Professor of English Literature and local poet Kirpal Singh said that he had always considered poetry to be Singapore’s “strongest arena of creativity in the literary field and the arts”. He pointed out that Singapore is “roughly in the fourth generation of Singapore poets writing good poetry in English”, and highlighted that “there are some very good poets below age 25 writing now”. Associate Prof Singh also discussed the breakthroughs in local poetry, citing adding that local poems are now studied in several universities overseas and that local poets are being invited to many literary and writers festivals around the world.
