SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan was interviewed about the results of the national Marriage and Parenthood Survey 2016. The study surveyed 3,000 Singaporeans between the ages of 21 and 35 years and found that 83 per cent intend to marry, but 59 per cent are not dating seriously and 70 per cent have never dated seriously. Prof Straughan explained the survey’s definition of ‘serious dating’ and said the difference between the expectations of men and women in relation to their potential spouse’s education is narrowing.
