The latest report issued by the Programme Advisory Committee (PAC) convened by the Media Development Authority (MDA) pointed out advertising malpractices on local TV programmes. Examples include advertisements that infuse programme scenarios and characters or are aired during closing credits, which are misleading and easily perceived as part of the TV programmes. Commenting on this, SMU School of Social Sciences Adjunct Faculty Dr Brenda Chan said that there are guidelines provided in the TV Advertising Code by MDA. However, such advertisements cannot be regarded as infomercials. If MDA supports the PAC’s criticisms on such advertisements, it might need to look into updating the Code for clearer guidelines, or have advertisers indicate clearly that these are paid advertisements.
