A team of psychological researchers led by SMU researcher Daniel Ho, sought to understand what motivates “simping” in men. Across three studies, the behaviours fell into two main categories: excessiveness and obsessiveness. Self-reported physical attractiveness, social status, and overall mate value did not predict these behaviours. Instead, a fear of being single emerged as the strongest psychological predictor, and men exposed to a negative singlehood scenario expressed a higher tendency to engage in excessive pursuit behaviours toward a current romantic interest.
