SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan believes that the government's measures to encourage marriage and childbirth have helped people who want to have children, but the key is that the number of singles has not decreased, and young singles are not in a hurry to get married and have children. She pointed out that as young Singaporeans tend to put their careers as a priority, it is generally harder for adults to expand their social circle and have time to date. This makes it relatively difficult for them to find a life partner. With late marriages, the chances of planning for a larger family will naturally decrease.
