Commenting on technologies supporting the elderly, SMU Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan, Director of SMU’s Centre for Research on Successful Ageing (ROSA), emphasised that technology can support seniors living alone but must not replace human care and connection. Prof Straughan urged for designs that foster community ties and timely assistance, rather than isolation, suggesting neighbourhood support networks alongside safety‑enhancing tools.
