On the matter of the court granting a gay doctor custody of his son, who was born through a surrogate mother, SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology Paulin Tay Straughan remarked that there would be those who would employ "case law" to support their point. However, she also pointed out that this case is unique, where the doctor was able to seek out a surrogate mother overseas. She added that whether he has been offered custody or not, does not change the fact that that the man remains the biological father to the child in question. Professor Straughan believes that from the perspective of a sociologist, allowing a child to grow up in a loving environment, and having the law recognise that a parent is raising their child, is the best outcome for them. She also remarked that from the global perspective, homosexuality is becoming increasingly normalised, and that the sexual preferences of a child's parents are no longer being questioned. She concluded that many may view this case as an opportunity to push for legal recognition for same-sex marriage.
