Commenting on the 2018 population report, which revealed that the life expectancy of Singaporeans is on the rise, SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan remarked that it is without a doubt that the ageing population is a problem that our society must face. This longevity demonstrates how government policies for healthcare and public hygiene are effective, and should be praised. Prof Straughan added that this is also a reminder that the government needs to take into consideration the needs of this demographic, during the construction of amenities, housing and design, so as to allow them the freedom and convenience to move around without difficulty.
