SMU Provost and Lee Kong Chian Chair Professor of Social Sciences Lily Kong shared her views on the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s call to encourage developers to explore more open designs. Prof Kong commented that gated communities around the world connote exclusivity, safety and security, and denizens pay for that privilege and standing. She noted that as long as there is a price difference between condominiums and public housing, it would be difficult to visualise how a fenceless community with facilities accessible to the public could materialise.
